Thoughts from a JR.High brain stuck in a 27 year-old head

John 13 – Christmas Break Study

January 3rd – John 13
13:14-15
“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.  I have set you and example that you should do as I have done for you.”

Right before saying this Jesus got down on his knees and washed his friends’ feet.  We are told Peter is the only one who spoke out and said he would not let it happen, but even to that Jesus refuted his protest, and washed even Peter’s feet.  I think we know what this is a picture of.  But the amazing thing is that this book is full of stuff that Jesus actually did.  And here in this verse he states clearly that we should do as he has done.  I’m hoping you can see this in its simplest form.
If I want my children to say thank you, I need to say thank you.  I set the example.
If I want my children to sit at the table during dinner and talk, I need to be doing that.  I set the example.
If I want my Jr.High small group to pray, and pray honestly…I need to do that, in front of them.  I set the example.
If I want these Jr.High guys and girls to respect their bodies, I need to dress like I respect mine, I need to talk like I respect mine.  I set the example.
Jesus wants us to serve each other, to “Love one another.” (v.34).  He did that.  He set the example.
Jesus wants us to spend time alone in prayer and meditation.  He did that.  He set the example.
Jesus wants us to believe not only the words he says, but BELIEVE the miracles he performed.  He did them.  He set the example of what faith in an all powerful Father really looks like.

Simple.  Right?

*Pray that your relationship with Jesus would be so intimate that you begin to speak and act like him, as per his example…ask God what needs to change for that to happen.*
*Pray that our entire ministry would reflect the example Jesus gave us.*  Real Love.  Rooted in Truth.  Reshaping Culture.
